Remodeling Contractor Writes Booklet to Help Consumers Avoid Top Five Mistakes When Remodeling

Redwood City, CA  March 28, 2005 -- “All too often people don’t make wise decisions with their investment dollars,” says Mr. Sundquist. “Often they must go through a learning curve before they understand the process.” “My goal in authoring this booklet was to help consumers circumvent the often costly and time consuming learning curve, and help them leverage my lifetime of remodeling and building experience”. “It was easy to write because it is based on real life experiences of talking to hundreds of consumers, many who had no previous remodeling experience”.

According to this year’s report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, “The Changing Structure of the Home Remodeling Industry”, remodeling expenditures in 2003 totaled 233 billion dollars. That pace is expected to continue with an inflation adjusted annual growth of 3%. A Better Business Bureau website states “Each year, home remodeling contractor problems rank among the top 10 consumer complaints to the Better Business Bureau. “Clearly the consumer needs more educating about how to go about a remodeling project” says Mr. Sundquist.

“The top five mistakes I see people make are; paying too large of an up front deposit, failing to get mechanics lien releases, over building for the neighborhood, employing a contractor based solely on low price, and underinsuring the post-remodeled home,” says Mr. Sundquist. “Any one of these can be very costly, but a combination of two or more could in the worst case put your home at serious risk”.
