Affordable California Beach Property?
The question asked by many beach lovers looking for a home in southern California is, “Can I really afford to live on the ocean?” But, with the astronomical housing prices in California and no real slow down in sight is beach property within the grasp of a new buyer?
The National Association of Realtors (NRA) has reported home price increases of as much as 47% in some nationwide markets. With some areas of California showing increases of as much as 24%. And with more desirable areas such as beachfront living leading the pack with appreciation, this too makes home ownership more difficult with every passing year.
“We have seen an increase in home prices like never before, especially in areas along the ocean,” reports Neil Cull, a longtime real estate agent with Re/Max Gold Coast Realtors -- specializing in beach living in Ventura County, California. “It’s no wonder that only about 13% of Ventura County can afford to buy a house.”

About 30 miles to to the North of Port Hueneme is the city of Santa Barbara, known as little Silicon Valley, home to the research institution of University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), the Four Seasons Biltmore, the Bacara Resort and countless well known tech firms. Port Hueneme (pronounced "port why-NEE-mee") is a small harbor city in Ventura County, California near Oxnard. The name derives from the Spanish spelling of the Chumash "wene me", meaning "resting-place." The population was 21,845 at the 2000 census.
