Baby Boomer Retirement Statistics
The Center for Carolina Living identifies current retirement trends based on "lifestyle surveys" of 50,000 families over 20 years and national change of address (NCOA) audits. Their findings help community planners provide lifestyle amenities now desired by people planning the next phase of their lives.
The Center for Carolina Living "data tools" are used by upscale communities to build dream retirement neighborhoods across the Carolinas.
"Millions of folks planning for retirement use the Internet to conduct initial research. Many will provide in-depth information through answering psychographic questions about lifestyle goals and plans," explains Patrick Mason, Co-founder of the Center for Carolina Living.
These virtual visitors are looking for their perfect lifestyle match, and by tracking where these families eventually settle, the Center for Carolina Living experts make accurate forecasts about what appeals to those planning retirement.
Clearly, retirement for many includes a nod to health and fitness, and since 60 is the new 50 in terms of activity for many, those amenities are critical. Tops on the list, is walking paths, with swimming and gardening close behind. "Exercise" is the most preferred health service -- ranking above more traditional health care services such as primary care physicians and dentists.
It’s not all about sports, however, because shopping comes in third on the list of desirable characteristics.
In planning where to move, "Natural Beauty" ranks the most important motivator, with "Climate" a close second. Again, the ability to enjoy recreation is third, ahead of cultural amenities, and even housing costs and taxes. Center for Carolina Living surveys report, it’s not about the money as much as it is the lifestyle.
Most arrive in the Carolinas from the Northeast and Midwest frost belt, although during the past year, Florida surveys tripled, for the first time outpacing New York as the number one ranked state of origin.
"Retirement survey data and research reports that many families are downsizing to garden homes, townhouses, and condominiums," said Mr. Mason. "And, we also know that retirement includes interest in continuing to work, whether that means starting or moving a business (at a 14% rate), or volunteering at a local food bank."
For companies targeting the super affluent baby boomer segment, our survey reports provide a 93% confidence level according to Social Scientists at Clemson, says Mr. Mason.
