Pool Safety: 8 Tips to Child and Homeowner Safety

Pool Safety. It’s not something that should be taken for granted. A swimming pool can be a great place to get needed exercise and for the whole family to have fun. But if you own a pool, you need to take safety precautions.

Making pool safety a priority will give you the peace of mind that will let you enjoy your pool fully.

One nationally recognized firm provides a few valuable insights into pool safety:

Here are some other things the company thinks are important for pool safety:

•     Don’t swim alone. You might fall, slip, have a heart attack and there would be no one there to help you.
•     Have a cordless or cell phone near the pool.
•     Make sure that someone who knows CPR and is trained in lifesaving is nearby.
•     Let parents know they are responsible for watching their own children.
•     Have an alarm in the house that tells you when someone is near the pool.
•     Check the pool area before leaving and locking the gate. There may be children you didn’t see at glance who must not be left behind.
•     Make sure you post a no diving sign. If you have a diving board, take it down.
•     If there is no fence separating the pool from the house, have one put up. Check with a local pool professional to see what will work best for you.

Pool safety concerns save lives. Pool fencing is especially important if young children will be using the pool. According to the U.S. Government, drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children under the age of five in California, Arizona and Florida. States with fewer home pools are also dealing with the problem. Nationally, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental deaths to children under five years of age. Between 1990 and 1998 there were 5,803 children five years of age or under that were drowning victims in the United States.
