The Keyes Company/Realtors Set to Expand International Business Development
In its continuing effort to build international representation in Latin America, Keyes has launched a new International Business Department. The goal of the Department is to develop relationships with affiliates throughout Central and South America and promote South Florida as the place for Latin American investors and Brokers to do business in the states. Keyes will be positioned as the point of contact in South Florida, providing a wide array of services for its affiliates, including access to property details via the Keyes web site and automated updates on the South Florida real estate market.
To facilitate the company in this new venture, Keyes has hired William Somerville as Director of International Development. William is a native of Seattle, Washington. His mother is from Colombia and growing up he did much international traveling and even lived in Columbia for a year, learning to speak fluent Spanish. He received his Bachelors Degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he majored in Spanish/Cultural Studies, with a minor in World Affairs. After college he became involved in real estate, working for several years as a project manager in the Los Angeles area, mostly with affordable housing development. A desire to be closer to Latin America and do more work more in the international arena brought him to Miami, where he entered and completed Florida International University’s intensive International MBA Program.
Mr. Somerville’s background and experience makes him the perfect choice to head up this new division at Keyes and he believes Keyes is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this expanding market. “Keyes has been doing business with overseas buyers for over 40 years,” Somerville said. “The company has maintained an international division and there are field agents who are designated as International Specialists…We want to bring those individuals into the loop.”
The Keyes Company sees plenty of opportunity in the Latin American market right now. “There is a lot of economic instability in countries like Columbia, Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil right now,” Somerville said. “South Florida is an attractive place for them to invest.”
The first order of business for the new Director will be identifying top Brokers in each country and drafting an introductory letter that can be sent to them. “We want to start by concentrating on the top cities in countries that tend to do a great deal of business in the states,” Somerville explains. “We want to build long-term, personal relationships with real estate professionals in Latin America…Not just Brokers, but developers and investors as well.”
“We’ll work out a contract so that Brokers in Latin America who refers clients to Keyes get a share of the commission,” he continues. “They help us out by sending a referral our way, we get a commission from the sale, and the Broker in Latin America, in turn, gets a share of that commission just for helping out their client…It’s a win-win situation for all.”
