Top British Magazine Suggests Lunar Real Estate As Perfect Future Vacation Location

Investors looking for that perfect piece of real estate to use as their retirement sanctuary or their vacation getaway have grown accustomed to rising prices and large crowds. But a leading British real estate publication claims to have discovered a place where great property bargains exist for those willing to speculate.

There’s just one problem: the property is not on Earth.

According to an issue of International Homes (http://www.international-homes.com), demand for property on this planet has driven prices upward at such an alarming rate that investors are expanding their horizons to include the moon.

“We all have our own personal idea of Shangri-la, and to most of us it is somewhere secluded,” states the article. “The Moon stands as one of the last remaining outposts of peace and quiet for those looking to get away from it all.”

Peace and quiet may be an understatement, as no human has stepped foot on the moon since Apollo 17 landed there in 1972. But a number of international organizations remain committed towards returning people to the moon over the next two decades, making lunar settlement a distinct possibility.

One group interested in seeing humans return to the moon has started offering lunar land claims for sale over the Internet. According to the Lunar Registry (http://www.lunarregistry.com), 95% of all funds raised through the sale of lunar property claims go directly to the Kennedy II Lunar Exploration Project, a partnership between private investors and independent international aerospace contractors that hopes to have permanent settlements on the moon by 2015.

Should the project prove successful, those who purchased land claims through the Lunar Registry would enjoy full property rights to their slice of real estate on the moon.

"Space law experts agree that actual occupation of the moon is the only legal method for ownership of land on the moon," said David Ferrell Jackson, managing director of the Lunar Registry. “Through our partnership with the Kennedy Project, we plan to make lunar settlement a reality.”

With prices beginning as low as £16 per acre (about US$27), the Lunar Registry has already sold more than 400,000 acres of lunar real estate. The organization will only make two percent of the moon’s 9 billion acres available for land claims, meaning the region shouldn’t resemble central London’s afternoon commute anytime soon.
