Translating a once held dream into a reality, the Los Angeles City College, located at 855 N. Vermont Ave. in Los Angeles has selected The Steinberg Group to design its new $13.7 million Martin Luther King Library.
The Steinberg Group will work in collaboration with library staff, administration and District representatives to design the 64,000 GSF Library, which is scheduled for completion 2005. The facility will house the existing Learning Skills Center, the All Campus Computer Lab, and learning disabilities and classroom study areas.
The Martin Luther King Library, which will serve as a new gateway to the campus, will be constructed on the site currently accommodating the men’s gymnasium located at the north end of campus along Willowbrook Avenue. A library plaza to the south and an entry plaza to the east will complement the building.
“The vision of Los Angeles City College is to create an oasis of learning within a uniquely urban fabric,” said David Hart, managing principal of The Steinberg Group’s Los Angeles office, in making the announcement. “Our goal as designers is to work with the faculty and staff to design an environment that fosters learning and critical thinking through technology and study, while creating a facility that celebrates community through plazas, courtyards and open spaces. The new Martin Luther King Library is a critical part of that vision.”
Principal David Hart, AIA, will spearhead the project. Hart has lead many notable projects, including the Information Services Building at the University of Otago, located in Dunedin, New Zealand; the Marriott Library renovation at the University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City; and the Northeast Academic Building and Student Services Building at Los Angeles Harbor College, located in Wilmington, Calif.
