Wildfires Knocking at Your Door What Do You Grab on The Way Out?
Wildfire season started early and fiercely this year with three outbreaks in the first few days of the season. Evacuations have started and some homes are already lost. Family disaster planning is more important than ever for everyone in the affected areas. Now is the time for getting prepared.
"I witnessed some of the evacuations during last year's fires," said Ed Deeley. "Families were running out of the house with little or no possessions. Poor planning and procrastination cost many everything they had, including the things that cannot be replaced."
Last year, over 3600 homes were destroyed in the wildfires. This year's conditions are ripe for a repeat. When the Sheriff or Fireman shows up at your door, it’s too late to start planning.
First, get your documents in order. This includes personal papers like birth certificates, passports, credit cards, check books, your personal or family phone book, insurance documents and a copy of your home inventory, listing all of your personal property.
Second, go for the memories and medicines. Grab photographs, letters, personal diaries and all of your prescription drugs. Third, grab the computer system unit; leave the monitor, keyboard and any other accessories. You are after
the hard drive where all of your data is stored. Finally, don't forget a change of clothes and the charger for the cell phone.
According to Ed Deeley, the founder of Ownership Records, "A Home Inventory is the first place to start in disaster planning." The process of completing one can help you to determine what goes and what stays. It also serves as a marker for determining if adequate insurance coverage is in place. Finally, it is necessary in the event of a loss and subsequent insurance claim. "You will not get paid for what you forget to list," says Deeley. |
